Jim Henson & Retro Commercials

As a product of the '80s, I am quite familiar with Jim Henson's 'The Muppets'. I've seen 'Labyrinth' countless times, and I've even endured the trippiness that is 'The Dark Crystal'. However, I was not familiar with Jim Henson's advertisement work from before his great TV and film success. Here are a few of the ads he worked on from way back.
I'll start with my favorite, the La Choy dragon:

Munchos:

That purple guy seems rather familiar..
Wilkin's Coffee:

Good lord, you better like their f--king coffee, or face the consequences!
McGarry's Sausage:

There are loads more, but the video quality (as well as content) aren't always the best. You'll notice a recurring theme of goofy violence though, so keep your eyes peeled if you decide to check out more of Henson's old ads.

Natalie Dee

Natalie Dee, a comic from the geniuses that create Toothpaste for Dinner, Married to the Sea, and Superpoop, has long been a favorite of mine. It's been around for a few years, so this is probably old news to most. Anyway. I'm a web-comic hoarder, and on this computer I've only got a third of my Natalie Dee saved favorites, but I've got enough here that I feel are share-worthy. The humor of Natalie Dee is often either self-deprecating or completely rude as hell, and generally pretty satirical. Sometimes, they're just weird and somewhat pointless. All forms are generally quite funny though. Enjoy!
(The title of the comic is posted above the image. Click the image to see it bigger)
"it's gonna be a f--king eyeball HARVEST"

"talking about tattoos you're going to get"

"if you're gonna wear shapewear, at least make it interesting"

"the american carmen miranda"

"if you can't pay a million dollars in medical bills you deserve to die anyway"

"beep beep"

"the chubby chaser"

"the inescapable allure of a man with a job"

I don't actually know the title of this one, but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Morrissey. Yesss.

"a gallon of diet coke straight to the dome"

Various forms of the Super Bowl Shuffle

In my previous post I mentioned how much I love the Super Bowl Shuffle, and I'm glad Boost Mobile is keeping the spirit alive. I think the reason I like it so much is because it's such a good sign of the times. Hopefully everyone has seen the original, but if not, here it is:

Go Bears!
Oh 1985. I wish I could have witnessed you in person.
Dudes had some groove back then!

Someone made a pretty rad parody called the Sex Offender Shuffle:

Sam Pound is the best.

That's all for now. Keep on shufflin'.

Super Bowl 2010 Advertisements

So the Super Bowl has come and gone and everyone has moved on. I've never actually watched the SP for the sport aspect, or even really for the ads so much, as it's just too much of a production altogether. So much commentary, so many shots of players sitting down, or of fans screaming in the crowd. Seems like very little playing to me. But now with YouTube and every other video site able to get the commercials directly after the game I can sift through the ads and find my favorites, and here they are! Hold on to ya' butts, I posted quite few videos...

Monster.com:

Kia:

CareerBuilder.com:

Audi:

(Loooove this one.)

HomeAway:

Boost Mobile:

(I love the Super Bowl shuffle. More on this in my next post.)

Coca-Cola:

(Aw, I love this ad.)

Cars.com:

Dr.Pepper:

Dove for Men:

EDIT: I forgot that this marvelous ad was from the Super Bowl. IT IS SO GOOD. I place it on the same level as the Snickers ad of awesomeness.
Old Spice:

And the winner for best ad is...

Snickers!

Liesbeth Bussche

via - though not much help if you don't speak French! This is what the site says when translated (poorly, sorry): "A curious idea of the Belgian designer Liesbeth Bussche with the use of the urban decoration to create there jewels of very big size. A series “Urban Jewelry” which presents for example earrings and collars. To discover in the streets of Tielrode in Belgium."

I love these pieces, they're all so clever!

Berkley Illustration

Alright - if you know me at all, you know that I love animals a great deal, and for them to be in silly outfits or situations only increases my love for them tenfold. With that said, for me to stumble upon Berkley Illustration awhile ago practically stopped my heart! Their specialty is portrait style drawings of various animals in quirky ensembles and they are totally adorable. I featured them in my tumblr a while ago but figure they deserve an official posting in here. And the best thing about Berkley Illustration? The You can buy their prints for cheap on etsy! They have oodles of animals to choose from so it's impossible to not find at least one (or ten) that you adore. I hope to one day have the space above my fireplace covered with framed prints of these guys.
